Weingut Josef Schmid

The original Schmid winery was established in Stratzing in1865 by Leopold Schmid, great grandfather of the current winemaker, Josef Schmid. Stratzing is situated on a plateau between Krems and Langenlois and a majority of the Schmid vineyards are located around the village. He also has vineyards on deep terraces in Senftenberg as well as surrounding the town of Krems.
As the 4th generation winemaker, Schmid took over the winery in 1991 and runs it in partnership with his wife, Irene. Passionate and hard working, Schmid is known for his unique, elegant and fruit forward wines, particularly his beautifully balanced Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings. He makes Kremstal DAC as well as Kremstal DAC Reserve wines. His top wines are the Riesling DAC Reserve Sunogeln and the Grüner Veltliner DAC Reserve Gebling. In addition, Schmid also keeps a deep cellar of older vintages of these and other top wines available to the public.
In addition to his busy life as a winemaker, Josef is also the mayor of Stratzing.
